Intern Project Summer of 2008

The interns selected a project near the existing Spring House (thatch roof structure in pics.) The interns designed, on a two week deadline, a natural pond which we call the Swimming Pond. They chose to use principles of naturalistic swimming pools which are becoming popular in Europe. After design, the interns meet with a representative of U.S. Natural Resource Conservation Service to determine the wetland status and get applications for permits. After permitting, they met with a local contractor and worked daily with the heavy equipment operators to get the pond built. To save on money, and to learn how to do it, small backhoe and tractor work was done by interns with current staff. The pond was filled and used for swimming my late July. Some planting has been done, but most will be done in the fall.
